Blog Assignment week 3
Where there is life, there is “culture.” From the beginning of
mankind there has been culture. A certain way groups of people do things and
live. Thinking about the cultural diversity I see, I do find myself at times
communicating differently with people from different groups and cultures. Since
I started in this program, I have a willingness to advocate for more “cultural
competency” taught in the classroom. This would be one of my first strategies
to communicate effectively with the children and their families, and for
myself. I feel some way or another there
would be “mutual satisfaction,” from communicating competently to the children
and their families... If you can reach and teach cultural diversity at an early
age, I feel the chances of all children having biases, prejudice and stereotypes,
would not be so great, I they learn and can identify cultural diversity.
The second strategy I would use to communicate effectively
would be to be “other oriented.” How could it hurt to “treat others the way you
think they want to be treated?” It is an effective way to communicate and show
others how you can be conscious of cultural differences, rather than ignoring
the differences, and how you can put yourself in the other’s person’s position.
The third strategy would be for me to improve my “perceptions”
to become a better and more effective communicator. I must give myself time not
to jump to conclusions too quickly. Looking beyond first impressions would also
really help me to communicate effectively with children and their families.
Being thoughtful when I need an explanation. If I want to make sense of
something I need to be mindful of what preceded or provoked a situation. I also
could use being “culturally sensitive” and not generalizing families, which
could lead to stereotypes too.
